Xero to Claude: the five routes and how to choose
Xero's own Claude connector is free, read-only and covers one organisation at a time. If that's all you need, use it and stop reading. If you need write access, questions across several Xero organisations, or answers that combine Xero with your CRM, job management or HR system, you need one of four alternatives: Xero's Remote MCP server, an automation platform, a community-built MCP server, or a data warehouse with its own MCP server, which is what Tugger is. This guide sets out all five, what each is for, and how to choose.
The five ways to get Xero into Claude
| Route | Access | Best for | Where it stops |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xero's Claude connector | Read-only, live | Everyday questions about one organisation | One organisation per connection, Xero data only, answers limited by what the API returns per call |
| Xero's Remote MCP server | Read and write | Developers and technical users building agents | Needs a Xero developer app and OAuth setup; still Xero only |
| Automation platforms (Zapier, Make, n8n) | Read and write, through actions | Triggered tasks: chase an invoice, create a contact | Built for workflows, not analysis; per-task pricing adds up |
| Community MCP servers (GitHub) | Varies | Technical teams who want full control | You host and maintain it; check permissions before pointing it at a live ledger |
| Data warehouse with MCP (Tugger) | Read-only, synced | Multi-entity reporting, accountants with many clients, questions across Xero and other systems | Data is as fresh as the last sync, not live; a separate service with its own fee |
Xero's Claude connector
This is the official integration in Claude's connector directory. You connect it from Claude's settings, sign in to Xero, and Claude can read invoices, contacts, bank transactions and reports for that organisation. It's free with any Claude plan, it's read-only, and it's the right starting point for most people.
Its limits are the ones you'd expect from a direct API connection. Each Claude connection is tied to one Xero organisation, so a group with three entities needs three connections and can't ask across them. It only sees Xero. And because Claude is calling the Xero API live, questions that need a year of invoice lines can run out of room or time. How to connect Xero to Claude walks through setup for both this and the Tugger route.
Xero's Remote MCP server
Xero also publishes a hosted MCP endpoint for Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and other MCP clients. It can write as well as read, which makes it the right tool for building agents that create invoices or update contacts. Setup needs a Xero developer app and OAuth credentials, which is fine for a developer and a project for anyone else. It has the same one-organisation, Xero-only scope as the connector.
Automation platforms
Zapier, Make and n8n expose Xero actions to Claude through their own MCP servers. They're built for triggered work: when a deal closes in your CRM, create the Xero invoice; when an invoice goes overdue, send a chaser. They're weak for questions, because each step is an action rather than a query, and the pricing is per task, which gets expensive if Claude is calling them in a loop.
Community MCP servers
There are several open-source Xero MCP servers on GitHub, including some maintained by Xero partners. They run on your machine or your server and talk to the Xero API directly. If you have a technical team and want full control, they work. Before connecting one to a live ledger, check what scopes it asks for and whether it can write; some can.
Data warehouse with an MCP server
The fifth route is different in kind. Instead of Claude calling Xero, your Xero data is synced on a schedule into a managed warehouse, and Claude queries the warehouse through a read-only MCP server. That's what Tugger does, and it changes what you can ask in three ways.
- Every organisation lands in one place. An accountant with forty Xero clients can ask "which clients have VAT returns due this month with unreconciled bank lines" in one conversation. A group can see consolidated debtors without exporting anything.
- Xero sits next to your other systems. Tugger syncs 70+ systems, including HubSpot, Simpro, Cin7 and Breathe HR, into the same warehouse, so "which overdue customers have open deals in HubSpot" or "match this month's Simpro jobs to Xero invoices" are single questions.
- Full history, consistent answers. Questions run against the whole dataset rather than one API page at a time, and the tables and relationships are fixed, so the same question gives the same answer next week.
The trade-off is freshness. Warehouse data is as current as the last sync, which for most reporting questions is fine and for "did that payment just land" is not. For that, keep Xero's own connector alongside; the two work together.
The same warehouse feeds ChatGPT, Gemini, Power BI and Tableau, so one connection covers the chat tools and the dashboards. Tugger is UK-based and ISO 27001:2022 certified, with the warehouse on Azure in the UK by default. Pricing starts at £300 a month and there's a free 10-day trial.
How to choose
- One organisation, read-only questions: Xero's Claude connector. Free, and and it takes a couple of minutes to set up.
- You need Claude to write to Xero: Xero's Remote MCP server if you have a developer, an automation platform if you don't.
- Several organisations, or Xero plus other systems: a warehouse route such as Tugger.
- Accountant or bookkeeper with a client base: a warehouse route, because the one-organisation limit is the whole problem.
- Technical team, want full control: a community server, with the permissions checked.
Frequently asked questions
Is Xero's Claude connector free?
Yes. It's included with Claude plans at no extra charge, and Xero doesn't charge for it either. Tugger is a separate paid service; the official connector and Tugger can be used together.
Can Claude write to Xero through the official connector?
No, the connector in Claude's directory is read-only. For write access you need Xero's Remote MCP server, an automation platform, or a community server with write scopes.
Can I connect more than one Xero organisation to Claude?
Through the official connector, one organisation per connection, and Claude can't query across them. Through a warehouse route, every organisation you sync is available in the same conversation.
Which route is safest?
Read-only routes can't change your books, which rules out an accidental write from a mistyped question. The official connector and Tugger are both read-only by design. Anything with write access should be given to people who'd be trusted with the same access in Xero itself.
Does Tugger replace the Xero connector?
No. Tugger is for reporting and cross-system questions; the Xero connector is for live, single-organisation lookups. Most Tugger customers keep both.
