Connect Sage 50 Accounts to Claude with Tugger | Tugger

Free live webinar, 15 October, 11:00. Ask Tugger Anything: bring a question, we'll answer it live.

How to Connect Sage 50 to Claude

Sage 50 Accounts is desktop software. Your ledgers live in a data folder on a PC or server in your office, not in a cloud API, which is why none of the AI connectors built for Xero or QuickBooks work for it, and why Sage has no Claude connector for Sage 50. Asking Claude a question about your Sage 50 data still means exporting a report to Excel and pasting it in. This guide covers how to connect Sage 50 to Claude properly, using Tugger's desktop connector and built-in MCP server, so you can ask "which customers are more than 60 days overdue" or "what's our gross margin by department this year" and get an answer from your own books.

Two clarifications first. This guide is for Sage 50 Accounts (UK and Ireland), including the versions sold as Sage 50cloud. It is not for Sage Business Cloud Accounting, which is a different product with its own API. And if you've searched for a Sage 50 MCP server and found CData, that's a database driver that runs on the Sage machine and is built for developers; it's covered in the comparison at the end.

What you can ask once Sage 50 is connected to Claude

Tugger syncs your Sage 50 data on a schedule into a managed data warehouse, then exposes that warehouse to Claude through an MCP server. Claude queries the warehouse, never Sage 50 itself, so the connection is read-only and nothing Claude does can touch your ledgers.

Typical questions:

  • Which customers have invoices more than 60 days overdue, and how much is outstanding in total?
  • What was our turnover by month for the last twelve months, excluding VAT, after credit notes?
  • What is gross margin by department or by product group this financial year?
  • Which suppliers did we pay the most last quarter, and which of their invoices are still open?
  • How does spend by nominal code this year compare with last year?

Claude writes the query, runs it against the warehouse and explains the result. You can follow up in the same conversation, ask for a chart, or ask Claude to show how it built the query.

What you need

  • A Tugger account. You can start a free 10-day trial if you don't have one.
  • Access to the Windows PC or server where Sage 50 is installed, with permission to install software on it.
  • A Sage 50 user login for the connector to use. A dedicated read-only user is best.
  • A Claude plan that supports connectors (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise).

Step 1: install the Tugger connector on your Sage 50 machine

Because Sage 50 has no cloud API, Tugger reads the data where it lives. A small Tugger application runs on the same machine as Sage 50 and sends the data to your Tugger warehouse on a schedule.

  1. Log in to Tugger, go to Connectors and choose Sage 50.
  2. Download the Tugger Sage 50 connector and run the installer on the PC or server where Sage 50 is installed. If you open Sage 50 through a remote desktop or hosted server, install it there.
  3. Sign in to Tugger from the connector when prompted.
  4. Select the Sage 50 company you want to connect and enter the Sage 50 username and password the connector should use.
  5. Save. The connector registers itself as a background service and starts the first sync.

After the first sync, Tugger refreshes on a schedule as long as the machine is on. You can see sync status and history in the Tugger dashboard. If you run more than one Sage 50 company, repeat for each.

Step 2: add Tugger's MCP server to Claude

  1. In Tugger, open AI Insights and copy your MCP server URL.
  2. In Claude, go to Settings, then Connectors.
  3. Choose Add custom connector.
  4. Name it "Tugger" and paste the MCP server URL.
  5. Click Add, then Connect, and sign in to Tugger when prompted.

In any new chat, open the connectors menu and switch Tugger on. Claude can now see the tables Tugger has synced from Sage 50.

Step 3: ask your first question

"Show me our aged debtors by customer, with the amount in each ageing band."

Claude will find the customer, invoice and payment tables, run the query and return the result. From there you can ask follow-ups, request a chart, or ask Claude to explain how it built the query.

If you need something that isn't listed, ask us. Tugger's connectors are extended based on customer requests.

Why not export to Excel, or use a database driver?

Sage 50 users have two other routes to Claude today, and both have the same problems in different forms.

  • Exporting reports. Works for a one-off question, but every question needs a fresh export, the data is a snapshot, and anything that spans customers, invoices and nominal codes means several exports stitched together. Nobody keeps that up for long.
  • Database drivers such as CData. These expose the Sage 50 database to Claude Desktop through an ODBC or JDBC driver installed on the Sage machine. They are built for developers: you configure connection strings and a local MCP process, Claude can only query while that machine is running, and the paid versions can write to Sage as well as read. For a finance lead with no IT support, that's a project rather than a setup step.

Tugger sits between the two. The connector does the hard part on the Sage machine once, the data lands in a warehouse that Claude can reach whether or not the Sage PC is switched on, and the MCP connection is read-only. Tugger is UK-based and ISO 27001:2022 certified, and the warehouse runs on Azure in the UK by default.

There is one more benefit specific to Sage 50. Once your accounts are in the warehouse alongside HubSpot, Simpro or Harvest, Claude can answer questions that join them, such as matching Sage 50 invoices to Simpro jobs or HubSpot deals. A desktop accounting package has never been able to do that before.
